HEPA filtration is used recirculating filtration towers, where air is filtered and returns to the kitchen. Generally speaking it is rare in commerical kitchen extraction systems as HEPA filters have a high pressure drop. This means that bigger fans and more fan power is required to pull air through the filter. This results in high ongoing energy costs. ESPs have a significantly lower opressure drop whilst retaining high efficiency and are more common in commercial kitchens.
When the pressure drop across the filter rises to its rated limit, which depends on how well the upstream grease and pre-filter stages are performing; a well-specified filter chain extends HEPA life considerably. We schedule changes as part of servicing. When HEPA filters are employed in a recirculating system, we would design to exchange the HEPA filters every 12 months.
